Speedster skis even faster

New Zealand's fastest man on skis, Henry van Asch has skied faster than his previous personal best with a speed of 192km/h. Van Asch was competing in the world speed skiing championships at La Clusaz in France. His speed put him

in 26th place in a field of 1 70. He had two runs from the top of the course, crashing at 190 km/h on the first run. Frenchman Michel Prufer won the competition with a speed of 207 km/h. The world record is 208.94 km/h set by Franz Weber of Austria. Henry van Asch holds the

New Zealand speed record of 161.39 km/h set in October 1 985 on a course set up on Mangaehuehu Glacier at Turoa. A speed skiing competition to be held at Turoa in September will be the South Pacific event of this year's Federation Internationale de Ski de Vitesse Grand Prix circuit.
