Waikune Prison not re-opening
Despite calls from prison officers, Waikune Prison is not to be reopened says Minister of Justice Geoffrey Palmer. Mr Palmer has described Waikune Prison, which is south of National Park near the Tongariro National Park boundary, as being the wrong prison in the wrong place at the wrong time. Waikune Prison was a minimum security prison. Prison staff in other parts of the country had called for the prison to be reopened to help ease the problem of overcrowding in prisons
such as Mt Eden. Some prisoners have been sent to Kaitoke Prison near Wanganui from Mt Eden and as a result Kaitoke is operating at maximum capacity. Mr Palmer said it would cost too much to adapt Waikune Prison to cater for remand and medium security status prisoners. Also the costs would be added to with transportation of prisoners to Waikune. He said it would not be good to move too many prisoners away from their family support services.
