College tries triathlon

An activities afternoon with a difference that

inciuded a triathlon was held last week instead of the usual clubs period at Ruapehu College. Inter-whanau (house) activities inciuded chess, new image rugby, volleyball and tennis. Competitors in the triathlon kayaked around Lakes Reserve then cycled and ran an extended course from the lake to the College. Organisers of the event were very pleased with the effort made by those junior and senior pupils who took part in the first activity of its kind to be run by the college.

Senior pupils kayaked a distance of 1200 metres around the lake at Lake's Reserve while juniors were required to go only half the distance. At the completion of the event, competitors ran a distance of 1km to tag the next member of their house team who was in the cycling event. Cyclists travelled a wide circuit back to the college, a distance of 6km, to where the third and final members of the teams were waiting to begin their 4km run. Results of the triathlon: Juniors — Tui I, Kiwi 2, Weka 3, Huia 4. Seniors — Huia 1, Weka 2, Tui 3, Kiwi 4.
