Fruiterer moves from van to shop
A new fruit shop opened in Raetihi hopes to offer its customers fresh fruit and vegetables at competitive prices. The no-frills style 'Seddon St Mart' opened its doors last week and is proving popular. Raetihi resident Lorraine Pehi opened the business after running a hawkers market outside the Raetihi Post Office for about four weeks and selling produce from the back of a van. Ms Pehi's aim is to keep overheads down which will enable her to sell produce cheaply — hence the nofrills packaging. Twice a week she makes a trip to the Coull Battell produce market in Wanganui to buy fresh goods. Ms Pehi says she tries to stock as much local produce as possible along with supplies of watercress and puha. The shop is open for business five days a week. Ms Pehi travels to Ohakune and the surrounding area on
Wednesdays to conduct van saies and deliver telephone orders. She also makes home deliveries in and around Raetihi to pensioners and rural delivery addresses.
