District council
The Local Government Commission has issued a provisional reorganisation scheme for the union of the Waimarino County, the Ohakune Borough and the Raetihi Borough. The scheme is open to objections from interested people and bodies until 14 June 1987. The scheme allows for the first election of the district council to be held on 19 March 1988, with 11 members and a mayor. The mayor would be elected by the electors of the district as a whole. The 1 1 members would be made up of three elected by the electors of the Ohakune Ward, three from the Raetihi Ward, and one each from the wards of Otiranui, Manganui, Huikumu, Parapara and Karioi. For at least three years after the formation of the district council the district would be divided into three separate financial divisions. The county would form one of the divisions and the boroughs would form the other two divisions. The Rural Financial Division, now Waimarino County, would pay 43% of district council administration costs with Ohakune paying 37% and Raetihi 20%, over this initial three year period. Bylaws within the new
district which are applicable to the council's circumstances would still apply. A bylaw which cannot be restricted to the area in which it is in force would be deemed inapplicable and be revoked by the new council.
