Redevelopment for Falls Track
A $25,000 grant towards the redevelopment the Taranaki Falls Track in the Tongariro National Park was jointly announced recently by the Minister of Tourism, Mike Moore, and the MP for Tongariro, Noel Scott. The money will be given to the Department of Lands and Survey under the Government's Community and Public Sector (CAPS) grants scheme. The Taranaki Falls Track is one of the most used tracks in the Tongariro National Park, and can be walked easily in two hours. It is now in need of redevelopment to give it an allweather surface which will not erode. "I am delighted that the Minister has agreed to our representations to upgrade this popular track in New
Zealand's most popular national park." "The centennial year of the Tongariro National Park deserves such recognition," said Mr Scott. "We are anticipating one million overseas visitors will come to New Zealand in 1991, the result of careful marketing and the image New Zealand has overseas as a clean, healthy country that encourages outdoor activities," Mr Moore said. "This Government's policy of regional tourism is helping to more evenly spread our overseas visitors throughout the country and these grants will reinforce that policy." "We are providing facilities to encourage our visitors, both from home and abroad, to get out and experience the mountains, forests, rivers and lakes that make this country what it is," Mr Moore concluded.
