Best baby day
A baby competition organised by the Waiouru Playcentre and Waiouru's Public Health Nurse Anne Whyte was held last Wednesday in conjunction with World Health Day on 7 April. The competition was aimed at increasing community awareness of the current immunisation campaign in operation nationwide and entry was restricted to those babies who were fully immunised for their age. Public Health Nurse Anne Whyte was thrilled with the 19 entries received after just i'A weeks of promotion. "It emphasises the community spirit that exists in Waiouru," she said. "It really was a tremendous response." The patron of the Waiouru Playcentre, Mrs Janine Birch, judged the eintries, which was what she termed as "an appalling job." The entrants, aged 0-18 months, were judged on
cleanliness, clothing and 'cuteness'. "Every single baby was gorgeous — it was such a difficult job to chose first, second and third," she said. Prizes of bonus bonds were donated by the Waiouru Lion's Club represented by Mr Bub Abbott and by Alf and Doreen
Walkers, proprietors of the Silver Fern Restaurant. The placegetters were Emma Nichols 7 months (first); Natalie White 12 months (second); Tina Smylie 7 months (third). The president's prize for the youngest contestant went to Tracey Shields.
