Post Office Box Charges

It appears from talk around town that a number of people are not only surprised but shocked by the 100% increases in Post Office Box charges and have decided to abandon their boxes. Should the Post Office find that they now have several vacant boxes for which Ithey have no further use, perhaps they could revert to a practice that was in use for hundreds of years before the Post Office came into existence. 1 refer of course to the

use of carrier pigeons to deliver mail. The boxes are an ideal size to accommodate carrier pigeons. This would necessitate the purchase of an occasional bag of grain, it is true, but this expense could be recovered by the sale of guano that would naturally accrue. So, instead of a postman (sorry — 4post person') having to deliver extra former box-holders'mail by bicycle or car, pigeons could be released each morning from the former and now empty boxes, to carry letters and parcels to individual residential addresses around town. Just imagine what a tourist attraction this could become ... another first for Ohakune!
