River's status discussed

The Raetihi Borough Council last week discussed at some length councillors'feelings about the future status of the Manganui-a-te-ao River. It was generally felt that a national conservation order over a local conservation notice would be more beneficial to the Waimarino. "We have a big tourist area and the Manganui-a-te-ao is part of that," said Cr Ken Summerhays. "To destroy the river in any way would be detrimental to tourism. People come to see the river in its natural state." Mayor Garrick Workman expressed similar feelings on the national status of the river. "A gut feeling says that a national order would be a better bet at this time," he said. Cr John Compton stated that a national conservation order "has far wider implications to this district."
