Riders prepare for championships
Tania Taylor of the Ohakune Branch of the Waimarino Pony Club was the overall winner of the D.C. section (16yrs and under) at the King Country Area Trials at Ongarue on Sunday. This followed a win in February at Ohakune and a 3rd placing at Ongarue in March in the Pre-Area Trials. Rodney McCoubrie of the Raetihi Branch came 2nd and Lizette Ginn from Taumarunui was 3rd with Cynthia Taylor from Kaitieke 4th, who will be the 'team' reserve. The three riders will travel as individuals to the NZPCA Championships as 4-6 riders must go to make a team. Unfortunately the King Country is unable to field any A1 riders (17yrs and over) to complete the team this year. Mrs Sharon Plowman of Kaitieke is trainer for the riders and says there is a lot of hard work to be done - especially on dressage before the championships at Avondale, Auckland from May 2 1 -24th. Their manager is Mrs Ann Atkinson from Ongarue, who like Sharon has had the experience of riding at the championships a few years ago. The team elected Tania Taylor as their captain. Two junior riders, Sally Williamsand Robert Taylor and riovice rider Shari Mason, also competed at Ongarue and gained valuable experience.
Full D.C. results are as follows: lst-Tania Taylor on Riccochet (55.75 penalty points); 2nd-Rodney McCoubrie on Piccadilly (67.00 penalty points); 3rd-Lizette Ginn on Raz-ma-taz. (70.93 penalty points); 4th-Cynthia Taylor on Glen Ross (74.37 penalty points). Tania was presented with the D.C. Cup as overall winner and a trophy for the rider closest to the cross country time allowed. This latter is a new award presented by Caroline Lies who has been concerned about riders completing the cross country phase of one day
events at a dangerously fast speed. Judy Dixon of the Kaitieke Branch won the D.C. Dressage Trophy for 1st place in dressage. The next event on the Pony Club calendar is the Waimarino Gymkhana on Saturday 1 1 April and the Ohakune Branch Adult Fun Gymkhana on Sunday 12, both at the Rangataua Domain. The weekend after Easter the Kaitieke Branch will be host to the King Country Area Dressage Day on Saturday and the Area Games Day on Sunday at Kaitieke. It is hoped many Waimarino members will be able to attend at least one of these days. The Games Day is a really good fun day suitable for all pony club members and is especially enjoyed by the novice riders. From Tuesday 14 to Friday 17 April, Mrs Sue And-
erson, an English riding instructor here at the invitation of the NZPCA and sponsored by MSD AGVET, will be in the King Country Area. Seminars on various topics will be held at Owhango and Ohakune. Further information can be obtained from Mrs E. Cooper. Some Ohakune and Raetihi members will be riding as guinea pigs for the seminars.
