Ohakune-Karioi beat Taihape Pirates

In their first game of the season OhakuneKarioi senior rugby team beat Taihape Pirates 22-6 at Taihape on Saturday. Taihape scored with a penalty goal and a drop goal from Ken Cribb against their opponents' four tries and three conversions. Ricky Harding managed a try in the first half against strong defence from the Pirates. Steve Cameron, Gerard Hipango and Henry Morgan scored tries in the second half, and Lachlan Harding converted three of the tries to make it a convincing win for OhakuneKarioi. The winning team had not had a full squad at training before the game so it was a good effort. In the other game of the day for the Waimarino,

Waiouru beat Raetihi 25 points to 15 at Waiouru. In an entertaining match that at several stages could have gone either way Waiouru was down 9-4 in the first half then had a close lead 13-9 at half time. Waiouru increased that lead with another try but Raetihi closed the gap with a converted try from Tom Waara to make it 19-15. Second five-eighth Wiremu Maunsell took Waiouru to victory with the last try helped by centre John Knight. John Taylor converted the try. Maunsell scored two tries for Waiouru along with one each from Tunui and McCauley. Taylor converted three tries and scored one penalty goal. Rapana and Waara scored tries for Raetihi, both converted by Geoff Fahey who also scored a penalty goal.
