Cultural day for river schools
Around 100 children from the Wanganui River country schools of Parikino, Ranana, Kakatahi, Upokongaro, Parkhauhau, Aberfeldy and Pipiriki and a large contingent of adults converged on the Ruaka Hall and Marae at Ranana for a junior school cultural day last week. The Whanau (extended family), of Pipiriki acted as the Kaiarahi (guides), and led the rest of the visitors onto the Marae. Titapu Henare and Koro Mark Cribb were the speakers for the Pipiriki people. The cultural day was for new entrants to Standard one children. They were divided into groups and taught the different ways to use flax, including weaving mats, plaiting headbands and fashioning whistles, crackers and mobiles. The group were entertained by Ranana and Pipiriki schools during the lunch-break which was followed by a concert and an early . finishing time of 2.30pm to allow the more distant schools time to travel home.
