Rail stops scrapped
During the weekend the NZ Railways Corporation announced a 'streamlining' of the Main Trunk train services which will affect many North Island stations. The daylight Silver Fern service will delete a total of nine stops between Auckland and Wellington to save more than an hour for the journey. Six stops will be deleted from the ovemighr Northerner service to cut nearly two hours from the trip between Wellington and Auckland.
National Park is one of the stations in our region that will be affected but the most serious result will be the decision to eliminate the Silver Fern lunch stop at Taihape. Taihape's mayor, Mr Noel Byford, expressed regret and concern at this cut-back which will affect eight members of the Railways cafeteria staff. Ohakune will not be affected by either the cut- . back in Northerner or Silver Fern services though the timetable will be rescheduled to allow for the later starts and earlier arrivals at each terminus.
