New role for ancient tree stump
A burnt-out stump of a totara tree thought to be several hundred years old has been unearthed on a Raetihi farmer's land and given a new place — as the centre-piece for a flower garden. Richard and Helen Koorey of Raetihi believe the stump to have been buried in the paddock for 70 years or more and was probably cut down for posts or fence battens when the land was first cleared. Its width at the base of the roots is about 10 feet across and it is believed to weigh about I Z2 tonnes. An attempt to lift the stump by helicopter failed because of its enormous weight and it took some careful levering with a bulldozer onto the back of a truck, to transport the stump to the Koorey's home on Mangaeturoa South Road.
