Poor crops for carrot growers
Waimarino carrot growers are facing decreases in yields and harvesting problems of crops due to 'bolting' this year. Most growers in the district are affected by the problem which has been blamed on defective seed by many growers, and on weather conditions by some seed suppliers. A meeting of local growers is to be held Tuesday 31 March to discuss the problem. With early crops, the carrots going to seed stopped growth and metre-high seed heads were common. These seed heads have caused problems with harvesters — blocking belts and creating extra work in the sorting sheds. Seed from all suppliers comes from North America where the growing season last year was apparently very harsh which may have caused defects in the carrot seed. In early crops the drop in yield has been estimated to be as much as 75%. The problems are not expected to be less with later crops.
