Forestry students visit park

Staff of the Tongariro National Park have had the assistance of two German forestry students for the summer holiday tiriod. Uti Andree 27, and Hanno Dehlwes 26, are both students of Albert Ludwig university in Freiberg, Germany and are in New Zealand on a practical study course for a diploma in Forestry Science. Uti and Hanno have been in the district for the last month and have been involved in various park activities, including a 3week circuit walk of all park huts to collect hut fees and

assisting with the landscaping of the Information Centre at Whakapapa. Both students are working in a volunteer capacity and while at Tongariro they are supplied with free accommodation and a food allowance. The pair have a short time left in the park and intend to spend some time travelling around New Zealand before they leave for home in June. Uti and Hanno said they are very impressed with the forests of New Zealand and the Tongariro National

Park's unique bush and landscape. They said in Germany, there are no areas designated as national parks. All

areas of forest have some logging but must have some preservation for wildlife and public use.
