Whakapapaiti Hut refurbished
It took 16 men just two days to strip and repaint the very popular and much-used Whakapapaiti Hut in the Tongariro National Park, a job that would normally take two people around two weeks to complete. Parks staff enlisted the help of army personnel from the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering in Waiouru, when they volunteered their services to the Park recently. The Lockwood building had been on the list of priorities for around four years but the size of the task had proved to be daunting. Complete with a newly painted roof and recent renovations to the interior, the Whakapapaiti Hut is of a high standard compared to other trampers' accommodation around New Zealand. This year's centenary celebrations triathlon race course will pass by the renovated hut.
