Ohakune's future linked to skifield plans
Ohakune and the Waimarino area are set for another burst of development with Turoa Skifields planning to double its skier capacity.
At present Turoa Skifields can cater for up to 3200 skiers per day and they hope to develop the skifield over the next five or seven years to cater for up to 6000.
At the introduction of the new company New Zealand Ski Fields Limited, Managing. Director Tony Wright said Turoa Skifields, which is now a subsidiary of the new company, will have up to $9 million spent on a second stage development plan. This development would have to be matched by a development in the facilities off the field, such as accommodation. Mr Wright said at present there were about 3000 beds available for skiers in Ohakune and this would need to increase to 5000 if the ski field development is to go ahead. The company has led this new burst of development with the construction of 'Beechers Lodge' at Turoa Ski Village. Shares in the lodge will be offered to shareholders in the NZSF Limited. The timing of the skifield development spending will depend on the pace of development of facilities in Ohakune, as well as on the growth of the New Zealand
ski industry, said Mr Wright. The growth of skiing in this country has been measured at arpund 8% per year (based on the number of skier days). Turoa's growth has been 1 5% per year up to 1985. Most of the developments planned for Turoa involve new lifts, starting with the quad chairlift at present under construction. Other lifts are planned for the eastern side of the skifield, and one lift in the area known as 'slider'. A new cafeteria is planned for Blyth flat, near the top station of the new quad chair. A proposal to build an intefnational class hotel on Turoa ski fields may be put forward after the review of the Tongariro National Park management plan. The company does not plan to promote anv other accommodation on the ski field as they believe it would be detrimental to the development of Ohakune. See story page 5
