Precautions taken at mill
Quick-thinking staff of the Winstone Pulp Industries mill at Karioi acted with speed when it was thought a tanker delivering Hydrogen Peroxide liquid had a leak. The tanker was delivering a load of the chemical to the mill when fitter Warwick Kyle noticed a small piece of metal debris on top of the tank reacting with the peroxide, causing the metal to fizz. The tanker was swiftly transferred to a paddock adjacent to the mill where it was attended by members of the Waiouru camp fire brigade and hosed down for safety. What was initially thought to be a split in the tank causing the leak was found to be a small amount of liquid that escaped during filling. Hydrogen Peroxide is a strong oxidising agent that reacts with organic material and is used by the mill for bleaching pulp. The mill's supply of Hydrogen Peroxide comes in 70% strength, while the same chemical is used as a bleaching agent for hair in a more dilute form
