Karioi Forest jobs axed
Major cuts in staff levels at Karioi Forestry are to follow the reorganisation of the Forest Service taking place as part of the formation of the Department of Conservation. As from 31 March the office staff will be reduced to five from a present staff of 1 3. The office will no longer be a 'headquarters' but will become a district office, under the Turangi Forestry District. All of the 32 wage-earning forestry workers face redundancy with the reorganisation. The work previously done by the forestry workers will be contracted out. This work involves the silviculture — including planting, pruning and thinning. It is expected that some of the redundant workers will take up the contract work. Dennis Brown of Karioi Forest Service said that things were going to be a lot different at Karioi Forest. "It will take a long time for things to settle down", he said.
