A smoother ride this winter

Motorists using the Ohakune mountain road will have an easier drive up to the skifield now that new road sealing is complete. The Waimarino County Council works department has been working on road construction for the last six weeks. They have sealed the steeper parts of the road that were previously metalled and repaired parts of the road that had deteriorated. The lowest section to be sealed is from just below the Waitonga Falls track carpark to a few hundred metres down from the Mangawhero Falls carpark. The upper section is from the 'hairpin' bend to Massey flat. The road has been notorious for corrugations in the metal sections, especially in the winter with the heavy ski-season traffic, but with the sealing of the steeper parts of the road, the problem is a long way towards being solved. About two and a half kilometres of road remain metalled which the County hope to seal in the neai future. The County have repaired the lower section of the road, above Rimu Hill, which had become severely potholed due to the deterioration of the road base.
