Overnight Wednesday, a television set was stolen from the Ohakune Hotel in Goldfinch Street. Offenders forced a window in the accommodation wing and removed the TV from a room. ★ ★ ★ The occupants of a house in Goldfinch Street, Ohakune, disturbed a thief in their car shed at around 8.30pm last Tuesday night. The offender made off with $40 in cash and a cheque book from a car inside the car shed. ★ ★ ★ Two attempts have been made to set alight to the site office of Miden Construction, at Turoa Alpine Village Rangataua Road, Ohakune. Some sheets of plywood and a sink have also been stolen from the site recently. ★ ★ ★

Three bales of wool were stolen from Wainjarino Wools in Queen Street, Raetihi, between 5pm Thursday and 5pm Friday. Police enquiries are continuing. ★ ★ ★ The Wanganui tramping club were the victims of thieves who stole a radiocassette player, two speakers and a pair of sheepskin boots from members' cars sometime over the weekend. Around 30 club members were involved in carrying a new stove into their Mangaturuturu Hut on Saturday. The group stayed overnight and tramped back to the Ohakune Mountain Road on Sunday afternoon, to find two of their six cars had been broken into. Those responsible had gained entry to the vehicles after throwing rocks through windows. As well as those items stolen, the thieves had unsuccessfully attempted to remove another cassette player and had left it badly damaged. The stolen cassette player was removed by means of a hacksaw. This is the first time the club has been hit by thieves. Park staff have acknowledged they can do little about such incidents but to warn people of the dangers of leaving their vehicles unattended while in the Tongariro National Park.
