Microlight over Mountain

Ian Heappey of Rangataua made what is thought to be the first flight in an aircraft made of sailcloth and aluminium tubing (a microlight) over the top of Mt Ruapehu recently. He took off from Raetihi Airfield at 3.15pm on Saturday 21 February and flew over the summit 22 minutes later. He spent ten minutes over the top taking photographs and then returned to the airstrip, taking 13 minutes on the downhill part of the flight. The maximum height gained by Mr Heappey in his flight was 2900 metres. Mt Ruapehu is 2797 metres high.
