Ruapehu College student awarded scholarship

Eighteen year old Jimmy Samson, a pupil of Ruapehu College, is this year's recipient of the Winstone Pulp Industries Scholarship — a grant offered annually to pupils of Taihape and Ruapehu Colleges. Six applications were received for the scholarship, only one being from Ruapehu College. Administration manager of Winstone Pulp Industries at Karioi, Colin Turner, said that Jimmy was successful because of his positive attitude and his overall high level of achievement. School reports, teachers' comments and examination results were all taken into consideration when the applications were appraised by the Mill Manager and Administration Manager and their recommendations were then forwarded to the Board of Directors. "The scholarship is in recognition of a high degree of skill and is offered to encourage young people to enter into industry," said Mr Turner.

"We are aware that young people need an incentive to become involved in industry and this is our way of showing them that we are interested." The scholarship covers the cost of enrolment fees and 50% of book fees while Jimmy is at Massey University. In return, he is required to maintain a high standard in his studies. The scholarship is reviewed at intervals to check on his progress. Jimmy also has the advantage of having a guaranteed holiday j?b with the Mill. Jimmy is studying Accountancy as his major subject at Massey. This seems to be an appropriate course for someone who was a member of the highly successful Ruapehu College Shares Investment team throughout his five years of secondary schooling. Whilst at school Jimmy was also involved in hockey and served as Captain of the College Hockey team for a time. He then played rugby for the College 2nd XV. His other interests included indoor soccer and music — he played cornet in the Ohakune-based Waimarino Brass Band for three years. Scouting was another interest — he joined Cubs

when he was eight and served in the Scouts until he was 15 when he earned a Chief Scout Award. In those eight years he attended two national Scout jamborees — one in Hastings the other in Feilding. Before he left College last year he shared the Loftus Shield Awafd — presented as a token of service to the school — with another student.

While at Massey he is living in a modern student hostel on campus close to the cafeteria, tennis courts, gymnasium, squash courts and other amenities. And because the names Samson and Scott share the same initial letter alphabetically, he finds that the occupant of the room next door is another former Ruapehu College student: Warren Scott!
