New arena for 1987 Waimarino Rodeo
The new Raetihi rodeo arena is nearly complete, with just some finishing touches needed before it is ready for the Waimarino rodeo this Saturday, 14 March. The new arena is sited behind the stand at the A & P Showgrounds on the Parapara road. In past years the arena has had to be set up each time a rodeo was held, which involved a lot of people and a lot of time but from now on the Waimarino Rodeo Association has a permanent facility, thanks to the committee and many volunteers and sponsors. The set-up will mean that this year's action will be a lot faster. The arena is smaller than previously, which will
mean the stock can be cleared quicker after each event. Six stock release chutes have been built which will mean less time between riders. Up to six contestants can prepare to ride at one time compared to just two at the last rodeo held here. Sponsors have been found for each of the chutes, providing funds to the association to help cover the cost of setting up the arena. Association president Earl Wiggins said there is a lot of interest in the rodeo and he would like to see it carry on. The committee are looking forward to holding the national finals in the future, he said. "Fd like to see the locals show their appreciation for Continued on page 3

Top New Zealand riders will be at the event, with points gained by them in the open events going towards qualification for the national finals. The open events, for registered members of the New Zealand Rodeo Cowboys Association, include the bareback ride, barrel race, calf roping, saddle ride, bulldogging (steer wrestling), and bull-ride. There will be some second division competitions, including a saddle ride (buck jump), barrel race and bareback ride. Events for the under twelves will also be held. Earl Wiggins said he would like to thank on behalf of his committee the following for their help in setting up the new rodeo arena: D. Robb, Kui Griffin & Co., Barrett & Taura, M. Webb, B. Berry, T. Punch, B. Chambers, A. McCarthy, Charmichael Transport, the Raetihi Rugby Club, A & P Show committee, S. Pearson, and others not included in this list.
