Ohakune pianist awarded diploma
One talented local lady has recently received a diploma from the Trinity CoIIege of Music in London after passing three piano examinations. Mrs Ann Greenwood of Soldiers Road, Ohakune, has been enrolled with the College since 1 983, when she passed her first exam— 'The Art df Teaching', which dealt with general principles of teaching and aural perception. Mrs Greenwood teaches local pianists from Grade 1 through to Grade 7. There are at present 35 students oii her role. It is rare for anyone other than full-time students in London to take on the course because of its demand on time and high degree of difficulty. Mrs Greenwood said she opted for the written course over the practical because she didn't think initially she would have enough time.
"I now find that l'm having to spend as much time on practical as I originally would have," she said. Mrs Greenwood passed her second exam 'Form and History', in June 1986. " Form and history is a very difficult exam because it requires you to have a general knowledge of the form and history of music from the year 1600 to the present day," she said. Mrs Greenwood passed 'Harmony and Counterpoint' — concerning the vocal and instrumental styles of the period 16501880 — this month, as part of her diploma. To pass, a grade of 70% was required. She is to sit her practical exam for a Trinity College degree in October and says that will be her last. Mrs Greenwood is a pupil of Mr Ray Nelson of Wanganui, who has taught music in New Zealand for many years and spent some years studying in England.
