Park friends pick up ski season rubbish

The recent ciean-up of Whakapapa Skifield by members of the Ruapehu Mountain Club Association, members of public, and park staff was very successful because of the incredible response by volunteers, said Park Ranger Russell Montgomery. Around 450 people worked in rain and snow, for up to 6 hours, to clean up the enormous amount of rubbish left behind after last year's ski season. Park ranger Russell Montgomery said he and other park staff were overwhelmed by the response to the clean-up, which is the first activity in this, the centennial year of the Tongariro National Park. "It showed the positive attitude of some people who are willing to put something back into the park," he said. Eleven truckloads of rubbish were removed on the day while there are still large numbers of rubbish bags on the upper slopes waiting to be removed by Ruapehu Alpine Lifts helicopter. The THC Chateau put on a barbeque after the cleanup for all those who took part.
