Raft race
Taking a weekend off from softball, three would-be ducklings hit the Tongariro river recently to take part in the Turangi Lions Club raft race. The rafters, from the R.C.O.B. women's softball team, won line honours in the seven mile race to take 1 st place in the women's section. Their time was recorded as 61 minutes, 5 seconds. The team - Colleen Wiliiams, Kim Burrows and Anita Huriwaka decided to enter the raft race to help raise funds for their softball
team trip to the Pan-Am Women's Club National Softball Tournament in Whakatane next month. The prize for 1st was $70 which has been put into the trip fund. A men's team also entered the race from the softball club. They started from the 25th grid out of 62 entries and caught up with all but two rafts, one of which was made up of two kayaks strapped together and the other a streamlined model with hidden propellers. The men's crew were L. Williams, R. Huriwaka and D. Williams. Their time for the race was 52.08.
