Karioi Sports Day
Karioi Sports meeting, next Saturday 28th February is going to be bigger and brighter than ever. The meeting has been going for 27 years and never had a wet day to dampen the activities. This year, besides horse events, there will be a fat lamb competition, children's and adults athletics, golf putting, height guessing, weight guessing (sheep), nail driving and lolly scramble. A feature event of the day will be the children's wether ride, in other words a children's rodeo using some feisty back country Karioi wethers as mounts and providing just as many thrills and spills
as the real thing. The late afternoon and early evening feature is tossing the sheaf, an old fashioned Scottish event whereby competitors endeavour to toss a sack of straw over a high bar with a pitch fork. The bar goes up in height every round. Horses will be well catered for with as good a programme as any sports meeting. Events include several hack classes, fastest walker, shepherd's hack and barrel race. On to the jumping which starts with the Kindergarten International, a great event for those just starting out or those who can only manage small jumps. If you can jump the logs around the
farm this is the event for you. Next step up is the Novice International for those a little more daring. In the main jumping there are Novice, Open and One round stakes Internationals as well as Maiden, Jumpover, Open and Handy Hunter for the round-the-ring jumpers. Children's Horse events also include learners pony, rider classes, low jump, bending, flags and a trotting competition. Extra fun events will be held in the next door paddock for horses and riders not in the main 'jumping'. Admission to the grounds is free, as is hot water. Bring your own food for a barbeque tea.
