Governor-General wins friends
The Governor General Sir Paul Reeves and Lady Reeves had a busy stay in Ohakune the last two days. Sir Paul visited Ohakune to take part in the town's 75th jubilee celebrations which began in the weekend. He was welcomed onto the Maungarongo Marae on Sunday afternoon as the first part of his participation in the celebrations. The spirit of the welcome was not dampened by the heavy rain that fell on the concert party, speakers and guests. Sir Paul said he was privileged to be in Ohakune for the jubilee, because it was one of the "lovely, rich and warm places and communities of our land" and that Governor-Generals often miss out on such places. Sir Paul attended an inter-denominational church service on the marae after the welcome and afterwards met most of the people present. The Governor-General and Lady Reeves were guests at a dinner on Sunday night along with Ohakune Mayor Bill Taylor, Ohakune councillors, and senior citizens. On Monday morning Sir Paul and Lady Reeves met school pupils from Ruapehu College, Ohakune Primary School, Ohakune Kindergarten. Rangataua Primary School and Te Kohanga Reo. They were welcomed onto the Ohakune Primary School grounds by the college Maori cultural group and Primary School senior pupils. Sir Paul then spoke to the children about his duties as Governor-General. He then went into the classroom with the children to meet many of them individually.
