Messing about in boats
Now that Des O'Conner has squawked his song and scuttled back to the USA itistimeto look to 1990 which is exactly what a group of Waimarino grinders and trimmers have been doing. The crews of seven hopeful cup challengers assembled at the Royal Makaranui Yacht Club on the property of Norma and Jim Cranston on 7 February. The course for the match races consisted of two upwind legs, a foul wind leg (nowhere near the chook
house) and a slalom to the finish line. The craft all used state-of-the-art technology with KZ T.U.B. using the latest apple-core sample-box method of construction contributed by a variety of nations. Cookie Borough III used varied tactics including sure-to-rise smokescreen spinnaker. to outwit their opponents as to where the start line was located. They were later the subject of an official protest when they sailed too close to the water and one of the crew was lost overboard. French Kiss came unstuck when they smacked into the
lip of a race official, and 'Fosters' lost its barrel. Rainbow Racer lost valuable time rounding a mark when they tried to get into KZ T.U.B.'s protest flag. Amid protests such as 'hands off my aft' and 'her bilge tanks are too big' the joint winners were declared. The 'Royal Makaranui Yacht Club' and 'Vir-gin Crew-Saders'willjoinforces to be the defenders of the series next time. Michael was asked to attend the event but he declined saying "At this point in time there is no point in timing this." With apologies to all concerned.
