Historic display needs help

As part of the Jubilee celebrations next week an historic display will be set up at the Ohakune Club, and a display of machinery put on by the Lions. The jubilee historic committee has lots of material on hand for the display, but this is mainly old photographs and newspapers. They would like objects from the old days to include in the displays. Equipment to represent past activities in the area such as old milling, gardening and farming tools, household utensils and tools, old sports gear such as hunting, skiing and fishing gear and any other memorabilia would add depth and interest to the displays. Anyone who has suitable material to loan should contact Merrilyn George, phone 58-560 or Moreen Hancock during the day at 58-956. The display will be open 10am to I2pm and Ipm to 4pm all week of the celebrations and 7pm onwards on Wednesday 18 February. There will be a film evening on the Wednesday showing three historic films made in Ohakune. One of the films was made by Dr Feltham who had a practice in the area in the 1940's. This film includes footage of the 1942 floods, the building of the golf course and the building of the Raetihi water supply system. The second film is of the Ohakune Primary School fiftieth jubilee in 1946. The film shows the float parade and a dance with returned soldiers in uniform. The film "Their Town"

will be shown at the evening as well as at the school PTA film evening with "Crocodile Dundee". The film was made in 1956 by the National Film Unit after Ohakune won a New Zealand-wide school banking prize. The historic committee is being assisted in setting up the display by the Waimarino Museum Society in Raetihi, whose museum will open on request during the celebrations.
