The Result Of Five Years Hard Work
A beautifully restored 1931 Talbot is the result of five years reconstruction work for Peter Hastelow of Taumarunui. When Peter was looking for a vintage vehicle to restore he spotted an advertisement offering the Talbot for sale in a local paper, while on holiday in Hamilton. After seeing the car he couldn't resist buying it. Peter said he bought it about ninety-nine percent complete, but it was in need of total restoration. Extensive work was car-
ried out renewing the wooden frame, rebuilding parts, reconditioning the 1665cc six-cylinder overhead valve motor and overhauling all the mechanics. Peter says of his flrst major project, "I did it when I had the time, when I felt iike it. I didn't work on it all the time." The character-filled Talbot, which has a blacktrimmed crimson body and a mahogany dashboard, was made in England. Peter is not sure when it came to New Zealand, although he
has papers dating back to 1945 and says it has spent most of its life in Auckland. One theory Peter has is that the car was off the road during the war due to fuel shortages and was reregistered and brought back into use at the end of World War II. As yet Peter has never seen another Talbot of the same type. He now uses the 48 horse power four-speed car, which can travel comfortably at 50mph, for weddings, parades through town and motorshows around the Waikato. He also enjoys taking it out of town to rallies throughout Taranaki and the Waikato areas. Its first rally, in New Plymouth, was just a month after the restoration project was completed. A mechanic with Matapuna Motors, Peter is now involved with another major project - restoring a 1964 Volkswagon convertible Karmann Ghia.
He has been working on it now for several years and is currently concentrating on the bodywork after having completely reconditioned the motor. Peter is a member of the King Country Vintage Car Club, which is a branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand.
