Pony Club's summer activities

Over the Christmas school holidays Ohakune Pony Club rallies ceased as many children spent the holidays away from Ohakune. However those at home have continued riding and taken part in various events including One Day Events at Carlisle and Taoroa, the Taihape Show and Ohotu Sports and a weekend camp at Karioi through the courtesy of Mr Robert Stout. This camp was held on the last weekend of January in perfect weather. Six branch members and five adults rode out on Friday evening cross country, which is rather more time consuming than road riding because of the gates requiring negotiating, but much more pleasant. Also grass under foot is much kinder on the horses legs and feet and the view of Mt Ruapehu and the surrounding country is truly magnificent. Saturday was spent in riding over the farm with a lot of jumping practise over logs, followed by dressage in the afternoon and lastly a delicious bar-b-cue. Sunday arrived all too quickly with further dressage in the morning and fun in the cold clear river before riding back home from mid afternoon. It was a tired but liappy group who arrived back on

Sunday evening, although wishing it could have lasted another day or two. Our junior riders gained a lot of confidence through three consecutive days of riding over varied terrain. The Waimarino Riding Club had only had one activity in January where those able to do so met at Mr Jim Frost 's in Pakihi Road fora day of farm riding, jumping practise, picnic and a swim in the river. This was another beautiful dgy and three Ohakune Branch members also joined the nine riding club members for a full and very pleasant day. Future eVents involving both clubs and the Raetihi branch of the Pony Club include the Pre Area Trials, a one day event, with beginnerand novice sections at Roke's property Lakes Road on February 8th and a dressage day at the A & P show grounds. Raetihi on February 22nd. On March 22nd the cross country running and riding phases of the Ohakune branch tetrathlon will be held at Rokes, and in April the Pony Club members gymkhana and the adults gymkhana will be held on the Rangataua Domain. Rallies will recommence in February and further information may be obtained from Mrs Cooper, phone 58-466.
