Water Scientists
A party of eleven fresh water scientists from Europe, North America and Australia will visit the Waimarino region next month as part of a post conference tour. The scientists are among 600 fresh water experts from all over the world who will be attending a conference at Waikato University, Hamilton, at the beginning of February. This is the first time that the conference, which is held every four years, has been staged in the Southern Hemisphere. Chris Fowles, a water resources scientist with the Rangitikei Wanganui Catchment Board, has been asked to supervise the tour to the Waimaino. Mr Fowles, who is based in Marton, was asked to lead the post conference tour as a result of his own expert knowledge in fresh water
science and not in'his capacity as a catchment board employee. The scientists will arrive in Ohakune on Tuesday 17 February after spending time in Taumarunui. They will take a jet boat trip on the Wanganui river, inspect parts of the Tongariro power scheme, visit the Turangi trout hatchery and take a look at the Manganuiateao river.
