"The Golden Opossum"— new coffee house

Mounted stag heads, fish, golden opossum in a glass show case are the order of the day at the newest addition to Raetihi — 'The Golden Opossum' coffee house. Owner and proprietor of the business Kevin Pickworth. has lived in Raetihi for 1 1 years and decided it was high time such a facility was opened in the town. 'The Golden Opossum' was so named after Mr Pickworth saw a documentary about the animal which stated that golden opossums are very rare — only one in every lOmillion. His golden opossum is in a place of honour in the restarurant. Kevin caught the animal in the Waimarino area some years ago. Mr Pickworth is not new to the catering business after owning the 'Kiwi Kitchen' — a restaurant specialising in Kiwi cuisine in Queensland, Australia. Workers started extensive renovations including repiling on the old Raetihi Printing Company building around six months ago. Local labour was employed to upgrade and convert it into a pleasant, comfortable coffee house. The shop is fully carpeted and equipped with modern restrooms. Open seven days a week, it boasts cakes and pastries fresh baked on the premises each day.

The coffee house has a staff of six, all employed locally, in charge of making up an extensive range of sandwiches, shrimp and asparagus rolls, muffins and other favourites. Mr Pickworth said he forsees the market growing and growing after observing tourists, tour buses and weekend jaunters on the increase in the area over the last 12 months. Bus companies have indicated to Mr Pickworth that they would patronise the coffee house if it offered restroom facilities and food at a reasonable price.

Next year he hopes to add on a summer garden area where customers can sit outside and enjoy their meals against the backdrop of Mount Ruapehu.

Mr Pickworth is keen for local residents to displav their hunting trophies in the coffee house and is interested in hearing from enthusiasts.
