All Blacks in Ohakune

The Ohakune jubilee celebrations rugby match looks set to be a spectacular event with 1 5 to 20 All Blacks and Maori All Blacks playing. The game is to be played at Rochfort Park on 14 February and will open the 75th jubilee celebrations. Spectators should expect to see some serious rugby with the players wanting to show good early season form. Chief organiser lan Stachan said the likes of these players has never been seen before in the Waimarino and probably would never be assembled here again, so it will be a great way to 'kick off the celebrations. "The Grounds will be in top condition for the game — we've been watering the field all summer, in between showers," said Robin Pearson from the Ohakune Karioi Rugby club, "theyH be running at full speed — it will be a great game," he said. The teams will be decided this week, dividing players into tw.o evenly matched sides. Team names are Ohakune Karioi Lions 15 and Ohakune Jubilee 15. Confirmed starters for the game are Steve McDowell (Auckland), Frank Shelford (Bay of Plenty), Marty Berry and Brett Harvey (Wairarapa Bush), Gary Knight and Bruce Hemara (Manawatu), Mark Shaw (Hawke's Bay), Frano Botica and Wayne Shelford (North Harbour), Steven Pokere and John Galligher (Wellington), Bryce Robbins, Charlie McAlister and Kieran Crowley (Taranaki),

and, of course, Andrew Donald (Wanganui). Organisers are still waiting for conformation from other players. Among the spectators will be the convenor of the Maori All Blacks selection board Mattie Blackburn and Brian Lochore, convenor of the All Blacks selection board. Brian Lochore will be the guest speaker at a Waimarino sportsperson of the year dinner to be held the night of the game. Wanganui players such as Steve and Huia Gordon, Bruce Cranston, Warrick Wilsher and Lachlan Harding will make up the numbers of the two teams. The Match is being organised by the Ruapehu Lions Club and the OhakuneKarioi Rugby Club. Police Constable Brian Wilson of Ohakune will referee the game. The Main game will kick off at 3.30pm with a curtainraiser between Ruapehu Golden Oldies and King Country Foresters at 2.00pm. Most of the players will be present at the Waimarino sportspersons dinner to be held at the Ohakune Primary School hall. Tickets for the dinner are $5.00 and numbers are limited. Persons wanting tickets should contact Graeme Pike, Ohakune Court Motel or lan Strachan, 58-784. Organisers of the sportsperson dinner are still accepting nominations for Waimarino sportsperson of the year. All Waimarino residents are eligible — from any sport and of any age. Robin Pearson, phone 58141, is available for enquiries concerning nominations.
