Highway to Heaven

On Thursday 16 January there was a programme on television called "Highway to Heaven". The story concerns Angels from heaven sent to earth on probation, and they are to use their time doing good. One particular aspect that struck me was the moment

when the son of a reverend minister was in a hospital bed unconscious as a result of an accident. The father, standing by the bedside of his son, was asked by the earth-bound angel, posing as a doctor, to pray. He replied "1 want to pray but 1 can't." Background to this remark was that the minister had despaired of God's help over a period of time.

The angel said to the minister, "Do not be afraid." The minister then prayed, and in a short time the unconscious boy opened his eyes. The minister's faith in God had been restored. A happy ending for everyone. None of us should be afraid to seek God's help through prayer, but many people do not know how to pray. Prayer is a simple matter. Ilt is expressing your wishes and desires to some one, namely God, whom you know will help. lt is like going to a good friend and asking for help or support. You use your own words to express your thoughts, confident that your friend will help you. Prayer is doing the same with God. You do not have to follow or say any set pattern of prayers. In youf heart you talk to God as a true friend. This type of prayer is con:erned with asking God for help and is called prayer of petition. There are other approaches in prayer. We can give praise and thanks to God for the good things he has done for us, and we can apologise to God for the times *we have not appreciated His goodness. Father Phil McCormack
