Pets survive christmas holidays
Members of the Waimarino SPCA have been kept busy over the summer holiday break with a number of animals being cared for under the association's 'Feed-a-pet' service. For a minimal fee, pets are fed and dogs are walked if required. Many people going on holiday have taken advantage of the $l a day per cat/$2 per dog scheme that ensures pets are adequately fed. It also ensures that there is someone visiting unoccupied homes on a regular basis. But even with this scheme there are stories of cruelty and neglect. Often homeowners 'forget' their animals after their travel plans are finalised and sadly pets are left to fend for themselves, often for weeks on end. This situation is not always critical when cats are concerned because cats seem to be able to fend for themselves if need be.
The same cannot be said for the family canine — especially when he is tethered by a lead with a pile of food and a bowl of water. Unfortunately dogs have no concept of rationing their food into daily allowances, which sees them gorged in five minutes and starving 24 hours later. The hot weather that the Waimarino has experienced over the past weeks has taken its toll on some animals. Several cases of dehydration of dogs around the area have been reported as well as reports of dogs that have been left tied up in the hot sun all day, every day. A little common sense and consideration goes a long way in these cases. The bare essentials for an animal tied up are food, shelter from rain and sun, and plenty of water.
