Burglers were rampant in Ohakune over the Christmas/New Year break and the local police force were kept busy following leads and making enquiries. Parklands Restaurant in Ohakune had the misfortune to be burgled twice, with $160 in cash stolen. ★ ★ ★ Ruapehu College was also broken into on Christmas night. The offenders visited every classroom in the main block and got away with five Ruapehu College dress jerseys. Enquiries are continuing. ★ ★ ★ Overnight, 26 December a house in Mangawhero Terrace was burgled; a rifle and a Sanyo radio cassetee player were stolen. ★ ★ ★ A large wooden salad bowl valued at $1000 was
stolen from the Sunbeam Lodge, Foyle Street Ohakune on 29 December. Police enquiries are continuing. ★ ★ ★ Overnight, 27 December thieves stole a sleeping bag valued at $80 from a clothesline at a property in Tawhero Street. ★ ★ ★ Police are looking for a grey 10-speed bicycle that was stolen from a house in Arawa Street. The value of the stolen property is $400. ★ ★ ★ On 31 December burglars broke into a house in Mangawhero Terrace and got away with a large quantity of assorted items including a stereo, headphones and turntable, binoculars, ski toboggan and an outboard motor. ★ ★ ★ Three burglaries of unoccupied homes and businesses occurred some time last week while their occupants were away on holiday. Ruapehu Motors in Goldfinch Street, the Education Department's Hostel and a neighbouring house in Lee Street were all broken into on separate occasions. In all three incidents it appeared that nothing had been stolen.
