Waimarino A & P Show Cancelled
This year's Waimarino A & P Show has been cancelled. The poor condition of the showgrounds is given as the main reason for the decision by the show committee though there are a number of other reasons. The show was to be held on the third Saturday in February which is the day of the Ohakune Borough 75th Jubilee parade. Committee president T om Punch said the attendance figures over the last few years have been disappointing and would be affected by the Ohakune Parade. He said the show date could not be changed as it was allocated to the Waimarino Agricultural and Pastoral Association to fit in with other shows, such as the Taihape, Taumarunui and Marton shows. The poor condition of the showgrounds was because of the insufficient growth of
the new grass, said Mr Punch. The spring had been wet which delayed planting and the summer has been very dry slowing the growth of the grass. He said if the show was held the only space available for trading would be behind the main arena, creating congestion for the stalls. Another major consideration was the football season. Waimarino Rugby teams use the grounds in winter, starting in April which would mean an enormous amount of work to get the grounds up to standard considering their present state. The A & P Show Committee had been invited to hold the event at Rochfort park in Ohakune where the Jubilee Float Parade finishes. Mr Punch said because there were no sheep pens at Rochfort Park or suitable building for a produce shed, holding the event there would not be practicable.
To compensate the young horses and pony riders of the area the committee has allocated S300 to transport young competitors to another A & P Show or sports meeting. lan Roke and Jim Frost have volunteered to make their trucks available, and the money will be used to hire more transport as required. Committee secretary Bernice Frost said the committee was enthusiastic about next year's show, which will definitely be on with improved grounds and facilities. She said they were keen to get the people back to the show after the poor turn-out of previous years. They will be offering a wider range of activities to attract the general public, she said. Mrs Frost said another poor turn-out this year would be worse for the association's image than no show at all, and it was better for them to look to 1988.
