Waimarino's first resident detective
Detective Tony Spiers will soon be a familiar face around the streets of Ohakune and the neighbouring area, as he takes up his duties in the Waimarino this week. Tony Spiers is originally from Auckland and has been in the force since 1969. He was a uniformed policeman until 1975 when he joined the C1B which he said was "a different sort of work altogether." One of his first cases with the CIB was the disappearance of Auckland teenager Tracey Anne Patience, which was much publicised but never solved. In 1 984 he was transferred to Taumarunui and again donned the uniform of policeman. He travelled to Ohakune earlier this year and liked the look of the area so much, he decided to leave his position at Taumarunui one year sooner than planned. Tony Spiers' transfer came through in June, but he has only just made the move and is now living in Ohakune. He told the BuUetin that the mountain appeals to him and he hoped to be able to indulge his passion for deer hunting while he is in the area. He said he is not a skier and isn't interested in trout
fishing because they have "too many bones." T ony Spiers is a dedicated weight trainer and recently was placed second in his weight class when he competed in the North Island Championships in Hamilton.
Next year he will be deciding whether to carry on with serious weight-training or give it all up to take up golf. With his transfer. Ohakune now has a resident detective for the first time ... previously the area was covered by a detective from Taihape.
