Police File
Ohakune Police attended a 2-car collision that occurred on State Highway 49 between Winstone's Pulp Mill and Karioi State Forest, at 8am Friday morning. The two occupants of one of the vehicles involved were taken to Waimarino Hospital where one man was admitted and the other was treated and discharged. Both men, in their 20's, are from Raetihi. No names have been released. ★ ★ ★ The Waimarino Club, in Seddon Street Raetihi, has been the victim of numerous burglaries in recent months, with another such incident occurring last Thursday night. The offenders got away with a quantity of spirits, beer and cigarettes. Police arrested two Raetihi men in connection with the burglary on Friday afternoon and they will appear in the Ohakune District Court this Thursday. ★ ★ ★ Last Friday, a caravan situated in the Raetihi Borough Motor Camp was broken into and a portable stereo-cassette player was stolen. Police enquiries are continuing. ★ ★ ★ A Wanganui man was lucky to escape with only minor injuries on Saturday afternoon after falling 24-30 metres down 'Clay's Leap' — a bluff located near the top of the second chairlift of Turoa Skifields, on Mount Ruapehu. The 31-year-old man was one of a party of seven trampers who had earlier in the day made an ascent to the summit of Mount Ruapehu. A member of the group left the party and made the trip down the mountain to notify the police who set about forming a rescue party. Rescuers feared for the injured man's life but fortunately he was able to be moved and the rest of the group made a slow trip down to Ohakune. He was then taken to Wanganui Hospital and treated for various cuts, abrasions and a suspected broken shoulder blade.
