Nam Wah Pai 'Burnout'
Nam Wah Pai enthusiasts from the Waimarino held a 12-hour kung fu 'Burnout' at the Waiouru Army camp recently. Club members worked out at a variety of exercises in the Army gymnasium, pool and on the sports ground. Twentyfive people started the day at 7.30am with a run round the track and then some field activities including long jump and sprints and a gruelling 400 metres of leap frog. Then it was into the gym for 500 various kung fu kicks and 200 punches. From 1 0am to midday the group swam in the pool, racing each other, playing ball games and swimming widths
and/or lengths. Lunch break was from noon to 1 pm then two army PT instructors took them through an indoor armystyle confidence course. They then went on to do some free sparring with partners starting with noncontact, then boxing, then contact sparring. To follow this they did 200 sit-ups and other exercises to burn up any excess energy and went on to some board breaking with a game of basketball to complete the 12 hours. All 25 club members completed the burn-out including the juniors who made up about half of the group. A barbecue was put on for those people left standing.
