Paper ceases publication
The Taumarunui and Turangi offices of a free weekly newspaper that once circulated in the Waimarino have closed down. No longer will 'The Plateau' be seen in the area from which it derived its name. The 2-year-old newspaper closed for a short time earlier this year after running into financial difficulties but managed to re-start publication.
However, Plateau staff were told at the end of last month that the editor, Mike Christie, was ceasing operation and closing down permanently with effect immediately. In addition to Mr Christie — the second editor in the Plateau's short history — five other adults (mostly part-timers) and approximately thirty paper-delivery children have lost their jobs as a result of the closure.
