Volunteer fireman honoured
Long-serving Ohakune volunteer fireman Glen Ennis was honoured by a large gathering at the Ohakune Primary School recently. His 25 years continuous service made him eligible to receive the prestigious Gold Star service medal which was presented to him by exregional commander and past chief of the Palmerston North Fire Brigadeand now representative of the United Fire Brigade Association, Nat Buick. The present regional commander Ron Smith, presented Glen with a silver tray on behalf of the Fire Service and commended him on his dedication to the
brigade. Ohakune Mayor Bill Taylor made a presentation of crystal goblets on behalf of the Borough Council and the town and thanked Glen for his service to the community. Other presentations were made by Ohakune Fire Chief Max Martin of silver goblets and a statuette. Life member John Nation presented Glen with his life membership to the Brigade. Ex-fireman from Ohakune and now president of the Wellington/ West Coast Gold Star Association, Doug Rose, made the presentation of membership into the association and offered words of praise to Glen and
his wife Francie, for providing the drive and the support. Francie Ennis was presented with a bouquet by Angela Martin, wife of the Ohakune fire chief, Max Martin. "I've really enjoyed the last 25 years with the fire brigade and the comradeship that exists within the group," said Glen. "There have been so many memorable moments in my time with the brigade and lots that couldn't be repeated." And as far as retirement is concerned, Glen has no such intention. "I've got a few more good years in me yet," he stated.
