Pleasurable parenting programme

A "P5" course, short for Participatory Programme Promoting Pleasurable Parenting, is being run in Waiouru through Waiouru play centre. The course, run by public health nurses Leigh Berry and- Anne Whyte, aims to teach parents ways of communicating successfully with their children, the practica! skills of child care and an understanding of child behaviour. Ten mothers. and their children are attending the course whjch is run weekly in two hourly sessions.

The parent gains confidence throughout the course and the ultimate aim is to make the job of parenting more rewardingfor both the parents and the children. Waiouru playcentre teacher Tricia Duncan handled most of the arrangements making it possible to hold the course at the centre. The course was developed by clinical psychologist Kate Birch at Taranaki Base Hospital who came up with the idea of a parenting course specifically for New Zealand families. She wrote her ideas down in book form, called "Positive Parenting from Toddlers to Teenagers."
