Spinners and weavers club small but enthusiastic and growing

The Waiouru/High Country Spinners and Weavers' Guild are a small but immensely enthusiastic body of women who meet on a regular basis to practice and further their spinning and hand-craft skills. The group has 12 members and they are keen to see other women in their area display an interest in what is a very worthwhile hobby. The club went into recess last year when there were just three members but after a successful advertising campaign their number swelled to what it is now. The group was visited by

Joy Harding from the Levin Spinners and Weavers' Guild who demonstrated various skills and some special techniques in dying wool. The ladies learned the basics concerning wool handling, wheel maintenance, basic spinning and experimented with novelty spinning. They were then shown the procedure of producing natural plant dyes and random dying with commercial varieties. Mrs Harding and fellow spinner and weaver, Mary June Pescini. held classes for an entire weekend and commented that the women had been extremely attentive and very willing to further their knowledge.
