Logging certificates first for Waimarino
The presentation of NZ Forest Service logging certificates to two local forestry workers last week was 'a first' for the Waimarino. Jeffrey Morris of Ohakune received a Logger One and Logger Three Certificate and Henry Mott, also of Ohakune, received a Logger Three Certificate. They were presented by Rotorua-based Forest Service ranger, Jim Wass, at a simple ceremony attended by fellow forestry workers in the Ohakune Club last
Wednesday. Jeffrey Morris, 37, has had a total of 1 6 years experience in forestry while Henry Mott, 27, has been with the NZ Forest Service based at Karioi for the past six years. The certificates they received have to be renewed every two years to maintain standards of competence. Mr Wass explained that the purpose of these certificates was part of an education process to try to avoid accidents in the bush, some of which are "horrific". "At least with a shotgun
you've got to point it at yourself and then pull the trigger but with a chainsaw ...!" Mr Wass, who is responsible for safety education in all forests in the lower half of the North Island, said that while these two recipients of logging certificates were the first in the Waimarino there were "five or six more in the pipeline working towards their qualifications A Logger Three Certificate was the basic one which had to be passed before any other qualifications could be obtained.
