'Fireworks'

Isn't it about time we did away with this ridiculous fireworks nonsense? Every year we have to put up with the noise of exploding crackers, frightened animals and barking dogs for a period of ten days or so. Quite apart from the expense and the noise nuisance there is always a possibility of injury.

And for what? Why are we in New Zealand commemorating a botched gunpowder job that took place across the other side of the world 38 1 yearsagoin 1605? If we are to have fireworks at all then let us celebrate some occasion in New Zealand's history or the New Year as they do in many other parts of the world, including our neighbours across the Tasman. And let's limit the sale of fireworks to the day itself (not ten days ahead) and sell them only to those who are 100 years of age or older!
